HIAT

What is HIAT?

HIAT is an acronym of "Halbinterpretative Arbeitstranskriptionen" (Semi-Interpretative Working Transcriptions). It is a system for the transcription of spoken language, predominantly used within the functional-pragmatic research community. HIAT was developed in the 1970s by Konrad Ehlich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München) and Jochen Rehbein (Universität Hamburg).


HIAT and EXMARaLDA

A "Handbuch" (manual) for the computer-assisted transcription according to HIAT was published in summer 2004 as a working paper in the SFB series. Besides giving general instructions for the transcription of verbal interaction (cf. table of contents), the manual has a special focus on questions of transcribing multilingual discourse and on the use of the HIAT conventions with the EXMARaLDA Partitur Editor.

The manual (printed edition) can be ordered free of charge from the SFB "Mehrsprachigkeit" (multilingualism) at the University of Hamburg. Alternatively you can download it as a PDF [2,7 MB].

Below the following hyperlink you find a "Beispielsammlung" (compilation of examples) of the about onehundred short examples of transcriptions from the "Handbuch" (manual) for the computer-assisted transcription according to HIAT. They were created with the EXMARaLDA Partitur Editor and are partly accompanied by audio-files.

Since the download of the "Handbuch" as well as of the compilation of examples is free of charge, you have free access to substantial training data and information for transcribing with EXMARaLDA according to HIAT.
